I was working driving miner trucks in Belarus. BelAZ huge ones. It was a heavy job, but paid well and as long as the engine kept running, nobody asked too many questions. The problem was that they closed part of the operation after several cuts and accidents. They started firing people and I was one of the first because I was the one with the least seniority and was hired on a temporary basis. After that I stayed around doing loading and transport jobs between ports. Nothing stable. Vietnam was one of the places where I ended up because there was movement, war, reconstruction and there was always a need for someone willing to move heavy things without asking too many questions.

The truth is that I joined the National Security because I needed a fixed salary and because I was already deep in a country full of shit. After the attack in Saigon, regular work disappeared almost overnight. Half the people were dead, the other half trying to survive. I saw recruitment ads everywhere. They paid more than any private company and offered accommodation, food and documents. There wasn't much to think about.

The contract with the Phantom Demon came after. It wasn't something planned. A team I was in ended up trapped cleaning an infested area near the destroyed districts. We were few and one of the agents already had a contract with that demon. He was killed in front of me. The demon was still there. I heard the offer and accepted because honestly I would rather lose something from my body than end up half-open on the street.

I gave up my sense of taste. Since then everything tastes like lukewarm water or ash, no matter what I eat. I don't care too much. I don't have big ideals about this. I do the job because I'm still alive and because in this place, stopping moving is the fastest way to end up dead. I know that this demon is going to claim something more valuable when he realizes that losing taste doesn't affect me much, since I don't have good taste, but I hope it's not something too vital, because I would like to have a child before I die.
